TechnoBabble's fifth show is all about finding, installing and using free programs-- programs that can save you hundreds of dollars and increase your productivity.

At the top of the list is Sun Microsystem's free and amazingly useful alternative to the overpriced Microsoft Office, called StarOffice. This office suite is composed of eleven essential programs, including a word processor, spreadsheet, email, schedule and address book, an html editor, even a web browser. I used StarOffice to create this week's show and I am very impressed with its ease of use and power. Look out Microsoft Office!

StarOffice is truly huge, so if you are going to download it, be sure to first download GetRight, software that allows you to resume file downloads should they abort or disconnect part way through. Of course, GetRight is also free.

You're using the Internet, but are you protected from hackers? Grab ZoneAlarm, another free program that protects your computer from intruders that can snoop on your files or even worse... Get some protection!

Search out free software at WinFiles and Download.com.

The best search engine on the planet is Google, not just for finding free software, but for finding anything!

In your quest for more free software, you'll come across files with the .zip extension. To unzip those zip files, download Power Archiver, another (you guessed it) free program.
