It's got wings, you gotta see it!

It's great that the Space Station is getting solar panels and I suppose image-obsessed NASA loves the publicity. But press reports have consistently referred to them as solar wings. The AP science reporter on the story has done it over and over durig this shuttle misssion.

Why is this worth a cranky blog from me? Two reasons:

1) I'm still not sure what I'm going to do with this thing. I wanna see if it will get me worked up to start writing in English again.

2) It's misleading to the public. A surprising number of the readers are bound to think these are actual wings, needed for the station to "fly" through space. It's not their fault they got ripped off by having a lousy science education in school. But it does mean that they are at risk of misinterpreting a metaphor. It would be a better service to write news plainly than to throw people off with a colorful term such as "wings."

Wings or no wings, I'm still looking forward to seeing the station shining brightly in the sky.

I used to have a Wall of Science rant page on this web site and I might just use this blogger to get back in the habit. You have been warned.
