dryad as muse whitman quote

Tuesday, September 11
It's amazing how time, despite our attempts to divide it into measurable increments, defies us and establishes its own boundaries in the wake of life-altering events. Today has seemed to go by in slow motion.

I was in B's office, riffling through patients' charts and attempting to sort out forms, when G and S came in and told me about the events occurring in Manhattan and D.C. I think it was about 9:45. They went off in search of a TV, and I turned on the radio and listened to the reports of what was going on in disbelief. I also called my mom, who described what was going on as she watched it on the news. She said she had to contact my uncle, and then she'd call back.

S and G came back, having found a TV on the fifth floor of our building. We went upstairs, joining the crowd gathered around watching the live newscast. The first tower had collapsed. One woman in the room was quietly sobbing, fearing for her brother. Others wiped tears from their eyes while seeing the images, others carried on muted conversations about what was seen. One person mentioned that this was essentially a declaration of war on the U.S. I saw the replay of the plane going through the second tower, and then I left, because I didn't want to see any more.

I went back downstairs, alternating between listening to the radio and attempting to work, but working was really out of the question. Mom called back, and I was on the phone with her as she watched the second tower collapse. I asked her to describe what she saw, and she said she simply couldn't.

We spent the rest of the day at work talking, and then I came home and watched the continuing news reports with my family. We all voiced our opinions...our shock, our horror, our sorrow.

My heart and thoughts go out to the victims and families of today's events; my prayers for all of us, for we will need them in the days to come.

Saturday, September 1
time for more shameless promotion...it's that time of month, you know:

reprise

if you're gone...

both for misanthropic, july and august topics. both are hrrmmm, more personal than anything I've previously written, which is probably why I procrastinated so long on them.

What else to say? My life is work, make-a-wish, sleep, and, as you can see, writing a bit. Oh, and I did clean my room yesterday. You all are overwhelmed with excitement now, I can see.

I took yesterday off, since B is going to be skipping town at the end of the month, and I'm stocking up on sleep and sanity now. Because you know I'll need it.

I had a good time at the Braves game with the work crew last Sunday...free food, decent view, and being in Atlanta made me happy. It's the last time I take Dad with me though, because he acted like a grumpy old man...not at the game, but afterwards. And he's not that old, so he's not allowed to fuss yet. However, it did give me ammunition to use in our debate about "my attitude at the Joni Mitchell concert" that has been going on since last year. He acted the exact same way at the game that I did there. So we're even now. I really do love my dad...despite our bickering.

I'm thinking about getting a new PC, mainly so I can give the family my current one in exchange for a reduction of the perpetual "money I owe them". Right now I have a Dell, and the model I am looking at, including a DVD/CD-RW drive, 250 MB Zip drive, and digital camera pkg., is about $1650. It also has a 1.1 GHz PIII processor, 128 MB memory, and 40 GB hard drive. Oh, and includes monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc. Which sounds good to me, but I'm not up on my computer hardware, so if I should look for a better deal, let me know in the little comment section below.

I have to go eat now. And think of something to do with the rest of the weekend.

Saturday, August 25
i'm too lazy to write a real entry (or use capital letters for the most part), so i'm hopping on the meme train:

*open up your CD player, what's inside? in the CD player of my computer here at home, nothing. computer at work has Matchbox 20's "Mad Season" in it. and my stereo system in storage has my Sarah McLachlan "Mirrorball" CD in it because I am a doof and forgot to remove it before packing up two years ago.

*look in your VCR, is there a movie? no, just my tape of the third installment of the "Irasshai" Japanese lessons taped off of public TV. it's been in there for three weeks now. guess I should take it out.

if there happens to be music playing right now, what is it? no music, just the hum of the computer and my typing

*what are you wearing? a white t-shirt and orange "boy-cut" underwear.

*look down, what's the first thing that catches your eye? the red ribbon on the 'sisters' photo album I have sitting on my desk

*turn on your TV if it's not on already, what network is it? just turned it off before starting this entry. it was on HGTV (Home and Garden Television)

*look out the window, what's the weather like? ally-boo says it's muggy and overcast - about 75 degrees out. tomorrow it's supposed to be in the low 90's.

*if you were to hit redial on your phone right now, where would it call? probably my voice mail at work. yes, I know that's sad.

*say "hello?" out loud, did anyone answer? no, everyone else is asleep.

*what are you planning on doing next as soon as you get offline? bedtime, yep.

i am in a "eh" mood because I need sleep and have a busy weekend ahead. so more here later after those two events occur.

Sunday, August 19
I am no longer blonde.

Wednesday evening, I colored my hair, as I have for...hmmm, 9 years now, to cover up my light brown roots that were peeking out from my then blonde hair. I used Clairol's Hydrience in "True Gold", which I have used before and come out with blonde hair. Well, not this time. I stepped out from the shower and looked in the mirror to find myself with a head of what I've deemed "strawberry brown" hair. It seems to be brown with red overtones and little gold streaks here and there. It certainly doesn't look natural, but it doesn't look bad...kind of like that burgundy or deep red color that is popular now...it's not natural, but pretty. I'm not sure if this color is pretty on me, since only one person I've seen outside my family has commented on it. I told S (who was the one who did notice it) that the lack of comments must be because it looks so odd on me. I haven't changed it yet though. The novelty of looking in the mirror and seeing my face beneath this hair has yet to wear off.

I am looking at buying a condo/townhouse or a really cheap house in metro Atlanta. Because I want my own place. I want to be able to pull my furniture and books and whatnot out of storage and use them again. And I would like peace and quiet at a time other than 1:00 in the morning. Yes, that would be cool.

Random Snippet of Conversation for the Week:

(side note: B had to take a computer class on Friday, so he could learn how to use this employee time card program. We all thought he would hate it, since it required him to sit still for four hours, but he found it to be all that and a bag of chips. Really, we should all be scared now. *wry grin*)

B: *in his office, making coffee* "On break, time to make coffee..."
L: "B, how's class going?"
B: "It's great! Not as bad as S made it out to be at all! I'm sitting next to Linda Blair though..."
L: "You're sitting next to who?!" (Yes, I am slow. Forgive me - it was Friday and I was sleep deprived.)
B: "Satan's handmaiden, Linda Blair! Every time she talks, it sounds like this...*insert B's imitation of the Exorcist chick here*"
L: *laughing* "Ha ha, Satan's handmaiden!"
B: "Yes, I tell you, you can hear the bowels of Hell opening every time she opens her mouth!"
