another day that will live in infamy.
coordinated terrorist attacks on the world trade center and the pentagon. amazingly awful. and who knows what that 4th plane (the one that was shot down outside of pittsburgh) was supposed to destroy, or if any other attacks are/were in the works.
i was nyc and dc just last week. thankfully my friends in those cities are fine. truly tragic for those who are not.

Promise of a Daily Me is an excellent overview of where web-delivered personalization has been and is heading. good stuff.

wow, a 6:20am flight after a bachelor party weekend can really knock your body off its rhythm. i'm bushed.
but matt's bachelor party extravanganza was much fun, and the meetings at yahoo were good discussion starters. much work lies ahead. after a long nap.

spent this weekend at my folks', as saturday was mom's birthday. i treated mom for her birthday by making dinner. the rest of the weekend was pretty much all about lazing around in the pool, which was just fine by me.
(5:08:55 PM)
catching up: spent the 4th sleeping in, kicking it on the beach admiring the lovely people along the strand in manhattan beach, and then watching the (pretty lame) fireworks in redondo beach. oh, and then spent 2 hours sitting in traffic to get home after the fireworks were over.

as i sit here, i hear fireworks going off. big ones. how weak is it when a town does their 4th of July fireworks on June 30th??!?!?! oh, la...

warning: pet-peeve venting ahead.
people, it's really simple. "it's" is a contraction for "it is" or "it has". "its" is the possessive form of the pronoun "it". and "its' " isn't a word.
when you're writing a sentence, take a split second and ask yourself if your sentence would make sense if you replaced your it's/its with "it is". if it does, you want "it's". if it doesn't, you want "its".
i guess i can see why some people are confused about the correct usage, but it just drives me nuts to see smart people misuse these words so widely!

there's been a big buzz in developer circles lately over microsoft's new "smart tags" functionality, due in office xp, and msie 6.0.
smart tags will allow microsoft (and others) to make specific words or phrases appear with squiggly lines under them on any document.
this is also true of web pages, even if the web page author/owner didn't want those squigglies to be there. a list apart has a great breakdown of what smart tags are. (and here's a technical how-to)
to some folks, smart tags on web pages represent a serious breach of their rights of expression or ownership. others, like a few guys i work with, think this is just a really useful new feature, and that people are over-reacting to the potential for abuse. i'm finding myself more and more convinced that the former camp is right.
smart tags are going to create huge problems on the net, and will lead to a microsoft-owned internet. and that stinks. i highly recommend joining or at least closely monitoring the smart-tags email group if you're interested in preserving a non-ms owned internet.

shockingly, mtv actually played some videos this weekend! but only for 24 hours, and only so they could promote mtv2, their "all video" sister channel. anyway, as i was flipping by, the video playing caught my eye. it was this bizarrely-styled animated semi-hip hop song, with a really cool hookline.
turns out it was gorillaz, "clint eastwood". gorillaz is billed as a "multimedia animated project" by several music biz veterans. very cool concept, and this first video is amazing.
i was tempted to buy the album, but i've talked to a few people who said the album feels really disjointed, and the amazon reviews seem to indicate that the songs on the cd are stylistically all over the map, but generally cool. mebbe after another song comes out...
