Hey Guys,

What's your personal opinion on Capital Punishment? What do you feel about the Andrea Yates case, where she drowned her 5 kids?

Later,
JP

She is clearly not mentally stable. I think that only a truly barbaric country would focus on her crime and punishment, especially death, instead of trying to help her.

I don't believe in capital punishment.........like we were told as little kids, two wrongs don't make a right. In Yates' case I don't think she was mentally stable at the time she killed them. The only way she will realize she did something wrong is through help from doctors. And if people think killing her will show her it was wrong and punish her, that is not true..... a true punishment would be to make her realize what she did and force her to live with it for the rest of her life. Death is the easy way out......... sorry if i offended anyone; that is just my opinion!

I personally don't believe in capital punishment. The whole idea that you would go and kill someone for killing someone else seems extremely hypocritical to me. And of course there's the fact that the new DNA testing is proving people on death row innocent. I don't think that we can take the chance of killing someone by lethal injection who may be innocent.

On the Andrea Yates case, I feel as though they definitely made the right choice to give her life in prison. I know that she is probably mentally ill, but still you have to have some sort of mental presence to drown 4 kids and then chase an 8 year old around a house before drowning him. [That] has to take some thinking. And what about the 5 kids? Does the fact that their mother is mentally ill justify their deaths?

I am glad to see the answers presented here about Capital Punishment ... [this] is a very severe and mature subject.

I sincerely hate the fact that Yates killed 5 innocent lives. Yates should not go unpunished for her heinous acts of violence. However, what will we prove by exiling her? If we are truly "One Nation Under God" then why do we continuously violate the Holy Bible's teachings? LIke it says in the Ten Commandments of the Old Testament, "Thou Shalt not kill." That commandment does no say, " Thou shalt not kill, UNLESS..." Capitol punishment is cold blooded murder! The Bible has NO ifs, ands, or buts. God Bless, everyone!

We have to look at the facts Andrea Yates killed her 5 children I believe that if a person kills anyone they have to be in the right state of mind to make such a decision. Andrea Yates deserves to be punished for what she did! She took the life of her own flesh and blood who knows what she could have done if she was let free.

I don't agree with Capital Punishment because I feel like it's letting them out a lot easier. There are worse things then death, living with the guilt that you killed someone would really tear me up. Of course, I've never done something like that, so I'd never know.

The main problem I have with it is that we're judging people. What gives us the right to go an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, a life for a life. Who made us God and let us choose who lives or who dies? I'm not saying that they don't deserve a punishment, they do for taking something so wonderful as a life. But I don't think that Capital Punishment is right.

Hello group,

I agree with many of the thoughts presented on this topic. To tell the truth, I have not followed the Yates case, but either way, I understand that she killed her children and some have said that she was mentally ill at the time or whatnot. Anyway, I agree with the decision of 40yrs to life. By not giving her the death penalty doesn't mean she's not being punished. Life in prison is punishment enough for any crime of the same magnitude. If you haven't guessed, I am against capital punishment. I thought justice was about correcting the problem and not sweeping it under the carpet, hoping it will go away? I don't mean that once a convict seems to be corrected that they would be able to be released back into public society, but correction on a personal level. When one makes a mistake, or even a grave mistake as taking the life (or lives) of another person (or people), who gave another person the right to choose that person's fate, as in when they die? True justice would be giving the person the opportunity to understand and learn from what they have done wrong. Capital punishment deprives the person of that privilege to learn and to live, even if it means in a cell for the rest of their days.
