[DEMO] I am curious, for those of you in the NYC public high schools. Do your teachers have any discussions or classes about 9.11, or is it business as usual?

[demo] I don't think 9.11 has been "taught" in our schools necessarily. There were some discussion about the attacks the first couple of weeks after the attacks, but that faded away once the country slowly tried to go back to "normal." But there were many discussions that took place among different students around the issue. In my school, for example, the Muslim students gathered around to discuss the new attitude towards Muslims. Fortunately many non-Muslim students and teachers soon joined and transformed it to a very interesting group. Unfortunately that is the only group I know of that was formed after the attacks for discussing it. However, even if many people didn't discuss it in school with teachers, many teens have started gaining interest about global issues. Many are reading more about current events, they are following the news, and they are realizing the world outside their blocks. I think that is one of the "positive" outcomes of this whole situation.

[demo] At our school we've made refence to it. The first day back the staff had it so that classes went on as "normal" and we would discuss the events in our history classes because they felt it would be most appropriate.I think the most helpful discussions were those held with friends and at places such as global kids because we gained a different prespective on things. At school it was predominantly about our feelings and since in the curriculum we learn about the Muslim religion in the 10th grade we went over what we knew and tried to come up with ways we could help educate others and help stop the violence going on against the Muslims and other people of color.

[demo] we really didn't discuss it at all in my college classes, but one of the programs that i am in tried talking about it a little bit. i think it's really hard for some people to talk about. last semester i visited long island city high school and i sat in on a 10th grade global studies class where they were studying religion- the teacher had split up the semester into christianity, judaism and islam- i happened to be there for one of the islam lessons. i found it really interesting just to learn more about the religion in general, but there were no references to 9.11 mentioned- and i'm not sure if there should have been. i also worked with 7th and 8th graders last semester- i started in october, so i'm not sure if they all discussed 9.11 in september, but nothing was talked about while i was there. it's a very touchy topic and i think schools really have a hard time addressing it.

[demo] At my NYC public HS, we just got finished a three week little curriculm about 9/11. We discussed why did it happen?, does the US government have a right or responsibility to go into other countries to get out terrorist?, and how is Bush handling all this? I think my teacher did a good job of presenting all the issues in the short amount of time. Now we have to right a policy paper about racial profiling, or the U.S. right to intervene in countries with gross HR violations.

[demo] wow, that's pretty amazing. i wish more schools were doing that. i think a problem around this whole event is that many people aren't looking at why this happened. although there are a lot of people who are trying to see both sides- there are definately a lot of people who aren't.
