Dear Board,

This isssues has been one of the most faught issues in Washington today and will continue to be in the years to come. The issues of Abortion is very complicated to deal with. Being the political coo myself, it's hard for me to stand for or against abortion, because both sides leave open for debate. But I after long discussions with myself I am against abortion in itself, but I believe that the woman has the final right to choice. I don't think you can make a woman have a baby if she doesn't want to. Even if they may have got pregnant under their own power, if they don't want the baby, they'll find some other way to get rid of it and I think it's best if the doctors handle it, not a toilet or garbage machine. So tell me what you think about Abortion, I would love to hear your beliefs.

See ya,

Josh

I think abortion is o.k. if the person was raped, but if the girl willingly had sex and she got pregnant, then she needs to be the one ot deal with it. there are a lot of people who would give it a nice home.

Locke  09:26pm Mar 12, 2002 EST 3 of 25
Wow dude... You chose an issue that I have very strong feelings about. This board is not a very good medium to use to debate the complexities of this issue. However, I will give it a shot...

I personally believe that a woman has the choice to have an abortion. We cannot force a woman to have a child. If we force her to have the kid then the kid will just be in a home that doesn't want him. That causes all sorts of pyscological problems and the kid could feasibly become a menace to society.

Of course, if we force a woman to have the kid she could choose to put the kid up for adoption. However, a lot of young ladies are afraid of that option because of the future. They don't like the idea that the kid may hunt them down some day to ask them why. They don't always meet the potential adoptive parents before the kid is given away.

So, I have no problems with abortion if the woman has considered other options before the abortion. In a perfect society we would have no need for abortion. In a perfect society we would all use protection... This is not a perfect society and we need to cope with the imperfections that it causes.

I think abortion teaches non-responsibility and should not be allowed. I also do not believe that it is right to kill an innocent child. I can see it in some cases (ie rape) but only in the VERY early stages of pregnancy, before it becomes a human.

Locke  04:57pm Mar 13, 2002 EST 5 of 25
Meggem,

I believe that the fetus is considered a human when the heart starts beating. That occurs at roughly 3 months. That means you are rushing a person into a decision they may later regret.

Abortion does not teach "non-responisblity." "Non-responsibilty" is learned through examples of people around a person. Abortion is just one answer to "Non-responsibility."

BrooklynGirl  07:56pm Mar 13, 2002 EST 6 of 25
I feel that women should have the choice to get an abortion. I don't think it teaches non-responsibility because if a woman decides to get an abortion every time she makes a mistake, it can eventually lead to infertility or other SERIOUS health complications. For example, when she decides to have kids she might not be able to...I think knowing the outcomes of an abortion teaches responsibility.
Also, I think in situations such as rape or child molestation, a woman or girl definitely should have the choice not to have that child. I think it would be hard for a woman to raise or even look at a child that is a product of one of these situations. What about when that child gets older? What mother would want to tell their child that they were the product of a rape or their grandfather is really their father? True, these kids could be put up for adoption, but like somebody stated earlier, there's the chance that the kids chase the mothers down and want to know why they were given up.
That said, however, I don't think that abortion is birth control. There should be national guidelines or a national list to prevent women from going back 4 and 5 times...unless in extreme situations.

meggem15  06:58am Mar 14, 2002 EST 7 of 25
I still believe it teaches non-responsibility for actions and it is not right to murder a person.

Locke  01:11pm Mar 14, 2002 EST 8 of 25
Meggem,

How does it teach non-responsibility?

I think hearing about other teens getting it on, hearing sex referenced in the media so much, and non-responsible parenting is what teaches non-responsibile sex.

meggem15  03:20pm Mar 14, 2002 EST 9 of 25
I agree with you all the way. However, I believe that abortion teaches non-responsibility in the sense that one is not accountable for their actions. Not only do they not become accountable for their actions, they kill a human in doing so.

Locke  04:11pm Mar 14, 2002 EST 10 of 25
Meggem,

Have you ever been around a woman after the abortion is done? They live with grief about it for the rest of their life. They know what they are doing when they go into do it and are responsible for their actions, they know it.

zion613  07:43pm Mar 14, 2002 EST 11 of 25
I agree with meggem that abortion on demand teaches people to be irresponsible. The Jewish religion has a stance on it that I believe to be the most logical. Abortion of any kind is forbidden. The only two exceptions are: 1)if the mother's life is endangered by the pregnancy; 2)in certain cases of rape - and then, only in the very early stages. I'm not sure exactly at what point the Torah considers the child alive, but it is definitely before three months.

brassylass  10:08pm Mar 14, 2002 EST 12 of 25
I think that abortion is a mothers desicion. Well it should be a decision of a couple but sometimes its the father that is the problem (abuse or gone).

It doesn't teach non-responsibility. Telling someone they only have one choice or excluding one choice with out even looking into it so you feel better is non-resposibility (i feel like president bush using that term :|!). Thye suffer consequences too.

PLanned parenthood spoke at aleadership conference around here (I heard they did at least) because there is a school in our district district (it is a SMALL school) that currently has 20 pregnant girls. it isnt just the "stoners" or "slackers" that are getting pregnant, it is a little bit of everyone. There needs to be more talk like this because a lot of girls lifes will be changed and some might be ruined.

Right now abortion is a solution that some girls or women might take, many do have the children though its a decision that will efect numerous peoples lives. I dont rember who sings the song but it goes something along hte lines of

"god forbid you walk a mile in her shoes, then you might know what its like to have to choose."
You dont know the emotional and physical strains on a person that has to go through that. Even if the girl gives up the baby, many mothers have a state of depression before and right after pregnancy (pre and post natal something er other). It is not healthy for the mother or the child to be growing under conditions where the mother doesnt want to be in that condition.

Before abortion was legal there were still clinics. They literally butchered the baby and child. They didnt care when in the pregnancy it happened nad chargeed outrageous amounts of money. Other girls stick coat hangers up themself to kill the baby. Since abortions became legal there has been less abortions than the known cases before (and they only knew a fraction of the cases). This is better for the child and the mother by a long shot.

I am not a Jew but I do know that they consider an embryo officially a fetus after 40 days. Before that its nothing, literally. There is sphere of cells (blasocyt) that turns into a rough shape of a human. It has three layers that turn into different parts of the body (endo- meso- and ecto-derm I beleive they turn into the bones organs and skin respectively).

legal abortion clinics only take cases that are so many weeks into the pregnancy (6 weeks???). With the technology today you can figure out if your pregnant the next day and if you are you can take pills to get rid of it. ANd there is a drug taht you can use 2-3 days after you have sex that stops the eggs and sperm from doing anything but it is illegal to perscribe i htink. They give it to rape victims.

finally it is a womens right to have one. It is her body, her emotions, nad her life. Do we want more people to turn out to be andrea Yates(wasnt that her name?) that kills their children? (she had an extreme case of the post natal depression stuff and I think she was a little crazy myself)

If you have any more questions about the science part or the abortion part just look at plannedparenthood.org. Plus if you are sexually active use birth control and check out some of hte stuff they say about that.

Mr. Bush has already told us that he doesnt want to promote birth control and abortions but you cant just not see that these things are happening and if things are not done to help are dangerous to all involved. One might say that president bush should not have to say anything about it because if he promotes birth control he is saying it is all right to have sex and is against his beleif. I htink that by not promoting birth control he IS promoting the spread of aids and abortion use. I by no means think that abortion is good but needs to be monitered.

Brassylass, I applaud your post. You stated all of the beliefs I have and then some. Great ideas!

To everybody else... How do ya' all feel about Stem Cell Research? You think it is perverse?

Zion 613,

I agree with you 100%.

I think that I stem cell research is something we need to do, not only to keep up with the times but it could help people that have no other answers

HappieOur  02:02pm Mar 17, 2002 EST 18 of 25
does stem cell research mean growing specific organs only? or does it mean growing an entire person from whom to harvest organs? I've always wanted that clarified because I could definitely see people like the Christian Right objecting to the latter, but not really the former at all. It seems like a great idea, especially when so many people need transplants and can't get them. I'll point out again that I really don't know what I'm talking about, and may be discussing something completely different, but oh well. Is anyone here very religious and opposed to stem cell research? I want to hear the argument against it. Peace,

Amanda

Dear Happieour,

Here's a very good site that explains Stem Cell Research. http://www.stemcells.ca/

Josh

I believe that it is good to have stem cell research to help others. However, I am very much against cloning of humans.

BrooklynGirl  08:12pm Mar 18, 2002 EST 21 of 25
I don't like stem cell research...I just find it weird for our government to be spending money on research that will sooner or later lead to the building of the "perfect" human.

brassylass  10:46pm Mar 18, 2002 EST 22 of 25
to clarify most of the current stem cell research has nothing to do with clongin human being to a full fledged man. They are taking the stem cells from aborted fetuses or obundant fetuses at fertility clinics (they are going to be there anyway) and creating stem sells from adult cells and eggs to create an ebryo to a blastocyt stage which is after a few days of conception. it is just abunch of cells at that point. From there they are trying to specialize cells into different organs or tissues.

I had to write a paper about it so if you want to knwo more just ask. i know more than I wanted to know. genetics doesnt interest me too much. I do bleive that they should do that though. Nto realy sure on full out cloning of people. I leaning toward the okay side though.

one neat genetics thing though, is that they can already pick some genetic traits. You might think of hair color or eye color but that is not what is being done. They have successfully suppressed the alzeimers gene out of a baby born to a mother that knew the child would have it! that is good news and more research on genetics (including stem cells) could lead to the discorvery of how to make people that wont get schytzophrenia (that is kinda environment too tho) and many other mental or physical problems that are given genetically. (my uncle is a shytzophrenit so that is interestin news to me)

Locke  11:06pm Mar 18, 2002 EST 23 of 25
A quick thing to point out about stem cell research...

They can take adult stem cells instead of fetus stem cells... BUT adult stem cells are proving to not be as promising thus far...

Fetus stem cells are always going to be there due to aborted fetuses. So I have no problem using stem cell research as long as it not used to clone and the cells are not taken away from a baby parents want.

futurepres2  10:08pm Mar 19, 2002 EST 24 of 25
Dear board,

I'm all for Stem Cell research. When you look at the long-term promises of this research it completely out weighs the disadvantages. Think about the numerous possible treatments for Cancer, AIDS, or Diabetes that could be conjured up and developed from this research. Being born in a family where both of my grandparents died from Heart Disease/Diabetes makes me want Stem Research to even hurry at a faster pace. My father has had Prostate Cancer and he has Diabetes right now, and I fear that in the future I'll have the same diseases. I also agree with LOCKE, as long as it is not used for cloning then Stem Cell Research is ok. We must explore any and all possible ways to cure diseases that have plagued this world long enough at all cost even if it involves Human Fetal Tissue. The world wasn't built in a day and I don't expect for this research to all of sudden bring drastic cures and treatments for every disease, but I hope and pray that one day Stem Cell Research will at least provide some comfort to families who suffer from passed down family illnesses.

See ya,

Josh

Locke,

Adult stem cells are in bone marrow and blood cells I bleive, and are already specialized. They are using female eggs (well the only eggs there are) and adult somatic cells (non reproductive cells) to make a blastocyte or more of that tissue. I think that is right.
