What do you think of President Bush's accusations to certain countries that they harbor terrorism?

SSJ4Goku45063  11:43am Mar 8, 2002 EST 2 of 18
I myself come from Iran, and I think, rather know, that it's ridiculous that my country is harboring terrorists. In one of his rather recent speeches, President Bush accused Iran of sending weapons to Palestine, allowing Al-Qada to escape across the Iranian border, and of developing Nuclear Weapons. I really didn't like his tone when he made that speech, and these accusations are all false. The first, the Iran provides weapons for Palestine, the US says the it has "some kind of evidence", but they never showed this evidence to anyone, they're just making accusations based on it. The International Committee investigated and found no clue linking Iran to the tanker full of weapons, and when they asked the US to turn over the evidence so it may be considered, the US simply refused, thereby giving them time to "produce" their evidence. The second issue, that Iran allows Al-Qada and Taliban to take refuge in Iran over the border is also untrue. Why would our government harbor them after what happened a year or two ago. The Taliban beheaded 12 Iranian diplomats and sent their head back to the Iranian government, just because of the same Sunni vs Shie issue, that's been going on for some many years now. WHy would the Iranian government protect their enemies? And finally, the accusation that Iran is developing Nuclear Weapons. It is true that the Iranian government is developing Nuclear POWER with the help of Russia, but it is solely for the purpose of industry, electricity for example. After WW2, the international committee signed several treaties which outlaw the development of Nuclear WEapons, and only allow the use of Nuclear POwer for peaceful purposes, and Iran is a member of every single one of these treaties, but the still the US allowed such countries as India or Pakistan to develop nuclear power, but when it comes to Iran, they say no. I also saw a recent interview on Thirteen with a representative of Iran. That's what I think, and Iran is not the only country accused, but these are the accusations I know of.

Very very interesting post there Mehdi. I had some idea of why Iraq waz being accused, and kind of support Bush in his accusations there. However, I had no idea about why Iran waz being accused. Your post is very enlightening and gives me some stuff to work with as I research the issue.

I don't know about North Korea just yet, but Iraq seems to have nuclear weapons and bio-weapons stashed away. Also, Mr. Huessien has shown in the past that he ain't a very nice leader. I read somewhere that there are roughly 2 million people in Iraq that don't like his leadership and would like his government to topple. Why are 2 million peope afraid to fight? They outnumber his regimes army.

What do you think about North Korea and Iraq Medhi?

...punch and pie
(Medhi, as a side post I wanted to ask you about your interest in electronics. I read in your bio that you like them, what kind are you referring to?)

brassylass  01:23pm Mar 8, 2002 EST 4 of 18
I agree with you medhi. Even though I live in america (and do agree with the iraq problem) I do not htink htat Bush's Axis of evil has any merit. I think attacking these People (he already has verbally) is making things worse. You cant just say there are terrorist there and they some of them might want to hurt us (I wonder why some of them would, could it be americas killing their families) becasue there are people like that everywhere. I think that he is now trying to make up for the administrations obvious lack of security before the 9.11 attacks. Making rash decisions wont help though .

eastendbeachbum  04:30pm Mar 8, 2002 EST 5 of 18
Hey all...
Bush is trying to intimidate the countries mentioned in the "Axis of Evil" into complying with his requests of info on terrorists. He's useing political power to enforce is ideals instead of violence. The bottom line with Korea is that they're a threat. The bottom line with Iraq is they are a threat The bottom live with Iran is they are a threat. The bottom line with the US is that we are going to prevent those threats from becoming a MAJOR threat.

AMBI02  04:43pm Mar 8, 2002 EST 6 of 18
GOOD POINT THERE EASTENBEACHBUM! I AGREE THAT WE ARE TRYING TO PREVENT THREATS FROM BECOMEING BIGGER THREATS. AND THANKS TO ALL YOU GUYS WHO GAVE ME SOMETHING TO WORK WITH ON THIS POST! I SOMEWHAT AGREE WITH BUSH HE HAS EVIDENCE OR HE WOULDNT SAY HE DID. OUR GOVERMENT MIGHT BE TRING TO TELL THE COUNTRY SOMETHING WITH OUT SAYING IT LIKE WHEN HE SAYS THEY HAVE NUCLEAR POWER WELL HES PROLLY TELLING US TO WATCH OUT AND BE READY FOR ANYTHING! MAYBE THEY DO MAYBE THEY DONT THAT IS IRRELEVANT THE POINT IS WE SHOULD BE READY FOR ANYTHING AT ALL, AND WE ARENT AS INDEFEATABLE AS WE HAVE GROWN TO BELIEVE. WE MIGHT HAVE DEFEATED MANY COUNTRIES IN THE PAST BUT WITH OR WITH OUT THOSE DEFEATS SMALLER COUNTRIES THAT HARBOR MORE ANGER ARE REALLY A BIGGER THREAT THAN THE BIG ONES WITH NO ANGER AT ALL. WE HAVE THOUGHT WE ARE INDEFEATABLE LONG ENOUGH WE NEED TO SEE WE CAN BE DEFEATED. CAUSE IF WE DONT WE WILL BE TO BUSY HAVEING OUR NOSE UP OUR TALE TO TAKE THE PRECAUSIONS THAT NEED TO BE TAKEN TO KEEP FROM BEING DEFEATED. ~~~~~AMBER~~~~~
P.S IF I OFFEND ANYONE I AM SORRY I DONT MEAN TO

Thanks for you approval, and in response to Locke:
The problem with Bush is that this a very bad time for a crisis liek the following to break out, because his father, was the president when the war between Iraq and Iran took place, and to be blunt, he screwed up badly. I'm not sure about North Korea, but I do know that Iraq has "kidnapped" certain leading scientist in the development on biological and nuclear weapons. I don't think that they have succeeded in utilizing their technology, but I do know that they have enormous stashes of Nuclear material stored in Warehouses, which is not a really safe thing to know, as we've seen through his actions in the Gulf War and his aggression on Kuwait. About North Korea, I'm kinda' faulty there because I don't really research on the whole world, I concentrate on affairs in Iran and the Middle East, for example the war between Isreal and Plastine (yes, it has officially progressed into a war, it's not an affair any more, according to the Israeli government, it's officially war. And that 2 million people thing, that's absolutely true, but we've seen what kind of a fight he can put up with his 500k army. There's another interesting issue that I'd like to raise. A former head of the CIA has recently written a book in which he admits to putting the Taliban in power to keep Muslims in check. In the book, he explains how the CIA was researching on Muslim countries, their affairs, and their population, and they've seen that during Muslim holidays, people from all over the world come together and that this is a "terryfying" force. They put the Taliban there to keep Shia'as in check, because they would raise the old Sunni vs Shi'a issue. And they did, as I pointed out with the 11 diplomats' slaughter. And during the Gulf War, the US government waited until both Iran's and Iraq's forces were all out and then stepped in. This thereby cause an immense fall back for Iran. I'm really sorry to say this, but Iran primarily lives on the money brought in through our oil. That's it, all of our savings and people were lost at the hands of the war.

Mehdi

P.S.: I like any kinds of electrnics, I just love it. Currently, I'm trying to learn LPC, which is a derivative of C, and basicly used in Muds (online games). Another important sidenot: As my parents tell me, my first two words were Barq (persian word for electricity) and sa'at (persian word for clock)...hehe

SSJ4Goku45063  04:54pm Mar 8, 2002 EST 8 of 18
In response to Amber:
The US sees these countries as a threat because they have the potential power to overthrow the US from its "throne" internationally. I mean just look at what the US does in the Middle East. It provides "white blankets" for Israel to attack Palestine. It buys oil at a certain price, purifies it, and actually sells it at 5 times the original value. Plus, they do "lie" sometimes. During the Gulf War, they told Turkey that they would cut any trade with them if they didn't surrender bases and men to the US to keep the war between Iraq and Iran in check. They said it was a temporary stay and Turkey, which was afraid of the US, said fine. Guess what...the US to this day, has not left Turkey's bases. They're only going to Afghanistan now, because it is a perfect strategic position. They're helping the new government, so that when they need to, they can just tell Afghanistan to do whatever they want. They're right there, perfectly close to Russia, Communist China, right next to India and Pakistan, both with Nuclear weapons (their nuclear weapons have officially been confiscated by the US because of threats of the Taliban, they have still not been returned, and probably never will be, even though there is a new government in Afghanistan now), and they can keep Iraq and Iran , both with very high muslim polulations in check. The new Afghanistan government will just be a puppet government, much like the Phillipines today.

Mehdi

P.S.: I hope I didn't offend anyone, if yes, sorry

Dear post,

I thought that Bush's statements of naming Iraq, Iran, and N. Korea part of an "Axis of Evil," was a very dangerous move. What if those 3 countries team up together along with other terrorist groups?? They could destabalize the hold United States of America and split us up like the Soviet Union. I know that's a little outrageous but a super power has to bow down one day and when the Soviet Union was the only Superpower know one thought during that time they would crumble in such dismay as they are in now. I don't see N. Korea that much of a threat to be considered part of an "Axis of Evil" although they do support terrorism. Countries like Libya and Syria are just as much as a threat as N. Korea are, because they have nothing to lose if they were to commit some act of terrorism against the US. I think Iraq and Iran are definitely possible enemies because they both hate the US and they both like to lie and be deciteful when it comes to hiding weapons of mass destruction and biological and chemical weapons. No offense to Mehdi. I agree with what the US is doing. Even though we may be taking over other countries slowly as a strategic way of stabalizing the Middle East, its a good thing, because the US wants peace, not war and I think we have to do something in order to contain the volatile situation in the Middle East that has been going on for decades. Why shouldn't Afghanistan follow our democratic policies? Before we came there women were treated like dogs. Children couldn't go to school and get an education, they were being starved by there own people! The US just wants to help these countries become stable so they can fend for themselves 10 years down the road. If a country was as powerful as the US, they would do the same thing and nobody would probably care. The US is only taking advantage of a situation that needs to be fixed in the Middle East, and I back the US in that position 100%.

See ya,

Josh

SSJ4Goku45063  06:00pm Mar 8, 2002 EST 10 of 18
I'm going to have to disagree with you on that Josh. No offense, but what would you rather have? An undemocratic government or a government which may not be as good as that of the US but which is your own people, making their own decisions. And the US is not trying to stabalize the Middle East, its trying to take over the middle east. If every middle-eastern country, right here, right now, decided to not sell any oil to the US, the US would crumble down so fast. They US needs the Middle East and to insure their safety, they want to take control. And the Afghanistan issue, true, that the US is trying to help, but look at the Philipines right now, true, thei condition has improved greatly but the people have virtually no say in the government, no matter who they elect, the US is telling them what to do and they have to because of the help the US has given to them in the pas. That's exactly what is going to happen in Afghanistan, the people won't have a say in the government's decisions.

HappieOur  08:04pm Mar 8, 2002 EST 11 of 18
I agree. Governments tend to do what is in their best interest, and so does America. That's why a lot of countries hate us, they find us hypocritical. For example, we haven't messed with Saudi Arabia even though a lot of the policies of its government aren't exactly humane, because we are dependent upon them for oil. I would say that most of our policies are based on money, and sometimes, people who back the US no matter what are looking through rose-colored glasses.

futurepres2  08:26pm Mar 8, 2002 EST 12 of 18
Dear SSJ4Goku,

I'm going to easily have to disagree with you. That is not true. The US does not control the Phillipines. They had their own government and their own President. They just didn't have the right policies to build a great country and a great economy. The US was never actually actively involved in how the Phillipines government was ran. Now since they've gone bankrupt, the US is jumping in to try and help them get back stabilized. If you haven't heard the US Sect of State speak, The US is not trying to take over the Middle East in anyway. That would be practically IMPOSSIBLE. Israel has been our ally for decades now and we're only obligating ourselves to that pact we have with them. And also, if you haven't hear the news The Saudi's and Egyptians want us to help. They just said how the US is the only country that can help this peace project get back on track and that's what the US is trying to do. We're trying to stabilize a region so it will be safe and kids won't have to worry about being blown to pieces while at the mall or just hanging out with their friends. That's whats wrong with the world now. Countries keep downing the US and complaining about our involvement over the world. But when a country needs help, who is the first to offer it: Not Iraq, not Iran, not Egypt, but The United States of America, the land of the free and the brave. We are the biggest provider of food to the Iraqi people. The US is the biggest provider of funds and food to practically every third world nation. So I don't think we're trying to take over the Middle East or the world. We're trying to create peace, well being, and stability in that region and beyond. Once again Afghanistan was ran by a regime that starved its own people, that beat and killed its women. The kids couldn't even go to school!! Even if the US did take over Afghanistan, I don't know why people would complain. They need help and stability also and the US will is there now and will be there until we see fit that Afghanistan can handle itself and its own affairs, whether that may be 2 years and 20 years, the US is there to assist.

See ya,

Josh

Locke  11:10pm Mar 8, 2002 EST 13 of 18
Medhi, Josh,

I think you both have very valid points on this. Medhi, you say that the U.S. needs the mideastern Oil to survive and thus the U.S. tries to control the Middle East...

Josh, you say that is proposterous and that the U.S. is only trying to bring peace.

I agree with both of you. I think the U.S. is trying to control the oil, but doing it under the guise of peace. Why fight a bloody war for something when you can just play nice to get it?

Think of how things worked when you were a kid. If you threw a temper tantrum you'd just get a spanking and wouldn't get what you want. If you were nice and quiet your parents would give you a reward for being good.

Same idea applies here, 'eh?

Dear Locke,

I agree, but I don't think the US is completely dependent on Foreign oil. We have many places in America that we get oil from, and could also drill for oil if a problem with those countries would ever occur. The US needs to develop better energy conservation policies. The US uses more energy then any other country. If anything, we make ourselves dependent on all oil and gas too much. We need to develop better vehicle gas standards, and create vehicles that run off battery cells or solar energy. I think that's how we can solve our energy crunch and I'm confident that in the coming years we can do that.

See ya,

Josh

Locke  11:41am Mar 9, 2002 EST 15 of 18
Josh,

I am with ya' on the fact that we could become less dependant on fossil fuel and be more efficient with it... I've heard that in Australia they have automobiles that get about 100 miles to the gallon. (probably lil' VW bug type cars, but whatever works.)

However, a lot of the big oil companies fund our politicians, and then the politicians do their bidding. That is the conspiracy theorist reason as to why we currently are so dependant on fossil fuels.

I don't agree with the fact that we can drill for more fossil fuels here on our soil. We have to many enviromentalists that would bust a nut if they heard we were drilling somewhere.

Yes, the best answer is to develop alternate energy, but nothing to grand is in the works just yet. The best idea I have heard for alternate energy is using cow, chicken, and human feces. Imagine how much power we could provide the world with the crap we see coming from our political leaders mouths ;)

...punch and pie

futurepres2  12:11am Mar 10, 2002 EST 16 of 18
Dear Locke,

I don't think oil companies have anything to do with alternate vehicle energy. If Ford, or Mazda wants to create an energy efficient vehicle they will. The government can't control car companies from building what they want to. Plus oil companies won't play too much a role in politicians since Enron went bankrupt. We already drill for oil in America. The environmental groups will always complain, but who cares what they say on a lot of issues. They don't think we should have oil or gas at all. I'm for the environment, but when it comes to survival you have to push some groups and rules aside.

See ya,

Josh

I think that it is just about the current administration looking better. THe reason 9.11 happened was becasue we did not prepare for anything like that. I think homeland security is more important. THese things at the airports should have been htere before. With the "axis of evil" it is personally attacking other countries. All these countries are going to band together now. Just because they have terrorists and some hate the US (well we have given them reasons. Some of the reasons they are so poor is americas past involvement) isnt reason for creating a real threat.

zion613  07:53pm Mar 14, 2002 EST 18 of 18
Locke, I agree with you that the US is trying to control the middle-east because of oil. It's also true that America has its own natural oil reserves - but the environmentalists prevent us from using them to their fullest potential. So, they kiss up to Saudi Arabia and Iran - countries that DEFINITELY harbor and aid terrorists ("Palestinian" suicide bombers) - and help the "Palestinians" get whatever they want because they need Arab oil. So, guess who has to suffer for it? Right, Israel! As usual. Sigh...Axis of evil? Definitely!
