After 9/11 there was a lot of persecution of Muslims and anyone perceived as of Middle Eastern origin. But this soon died out because many people realized that no one should be discriminated against, or so they say. Then why are LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered) people still being discriminated against?

I don't understand the discrimination against LGBT, either. I live in San Francisco and am still shocked that people can crack jokes like, "That is so gay" or something along the lines of that. I mean, love is love. A friend involved in peer resource said that people who usually make lewd comments about LGBT are people who fear it the most, probably because it could happen to them. I think it's also the environment that you are raised in. There are several openly homosexual teachers at my school (like, four in the social studies department) and the community that I live in is very liberal. It also depends on the influence of family, friends, and religion. I think that LGBT are still discriminated against because the issue is one that doesn't diminish with age. LGBT have always been under attack by religions and conservatives (I think they are interrelated in some ways, no?), but specific races have not been (there have been genocides, but that has dealt with generations). I think that in order to live in harmony, we need to practice a greater degree of tolerance.

The reason people are still overtly homophobic is because these evens didn't change anything and these people are exactly back where they were before the attacks. Even in August, you'd still hear people who condemned racism as "discrimination" being vehemently against homosexuality and bisexuality, and saying that the question of alternative lifestyles was "different". "But this is different!" The events of September 11 didn't teach people a thing.
