This topic is to discuss manifestations of racism related the terrorist attacks and war on terror, such as people beating up people from India, proposals for racial profiling, authorities quelling people's fears by busting Arab-looking people who scare them, and trying immigrants without a fair trial.

DrummerChick05  07:16pm Apr 2, 2002 EST 2 of 8
Immigrants might not be citizens from the US, but they should still be given at least SOME of the same rights as a citizen of US. If they ARE citizens, they are entitled to a fair trial and it's unconstitutional. Yet, if they aren't citizens, should the government hold that against them? If they really did what they are accused of, then they'll be convicted WITH a fair trial.

Agreed completely. If they really are innocent, the thing the jury has to do is find them innocent, no matter what country it is. The whole purpose of this court thing is to seek the TRUTH; it has nothing to do with the special privileges that come with citizenship. I bet people who work at courts probably want other countries (Afghanistan maybe?) to change their own ways to give fail trials and convict only on irrefuteable evidence, so shouldn't they be doing that to anything in their own court? Basically I think this support for trying people in flimsy-evidence tribunals comes from people who want to do literally ANYTHING to fight terrorism even if the result is even worse than 9-11. Have you heard there was a poll of American adults where they said they should shoot down any plane without question if it possibly might be a terrorist threat? HELLO? What if YOU guys were on that airplane that was in question? YOU'D be dead!

Does anyone know the name of this man? There was a prof from the University of Washington who a man asked the officials to kick out because he "scared" him (with his Middle Eastern looks) and the airline actually forced the prof to get off the plane! It turned out he was of Greek descent, he wasn't even Middle Eastern!!! I can't find his name, and I want to be able to look him up to find out what happened to him (and what hppened to the racist sniveling little brat who asked that he be kicked off the plane and the gestapo pilots who complied). Does anyone know?

I don't think that there has been actual manifestation of racism. I think that racism especially toward Muslims, immigrants, and others has always existed but it hasn't been that obvious or acceptable. Racial profiling is sort of legalized especially after Sept.11. As a "Black" person, I get a chance to see racial profiling a lot. I go into a store, I'm followed. I stop at a corner, and the cops will try to find a reason to question me. I sense racism everywhere I go but I can't do anything about it because it is a social norm.

A.J.: By "because it is a social norm", you mean you can't fight racism with the law because it exists as an unwritten attitude, often expressed subtly, rather than being something formally codified into law, correct?

I experience the exact thing just because of my age. Either that, or my dress, but the two of them really go together. Free country, my ass! I live in fear as I try to walk around when I'm alone and there are police hanging in the area.

Slashall: Unfortunately, I don't know the name of the Greek man. I tried doing an Internet search on "Greek + University_of_Washington + professor + airplane" and every other combination available, but found nothing.

I haven't heard anything about the Greek professor, either. I'll see if I can find something, though...

I agree complately with Sergei. My friends and I will be walking to go skateboarding someplace. None of us are doing anything illegal or ANYTHING and cops will just start following us. Then of course, when things are vandalized in school, everyone blames my "clique" when it's actually those assholes who shop at Abercrombie & Fitch and Aeropostale (*shudder*) and play lacrosse and football and think they're better than everyone else. I have that "profiling" thing. Just because *SOME* kids who skateboard and wear clothes from Pac Sun/Hot Topic smoke pot and do stupid stuff doesn't mean ALL of them do. In fact, most of the kids in my school who smoke pot/drink at parties are usually the kids on the football/lacrosse teams who almost all teachers think are completely perfect. There are 2 guys on our wrestling team of 20 that aren't complete pot heads and even less than that ratio on the football/lacrosse teams.

Sergei  01:22pm Apr 10, 2002 EST 8 of 8
My high school is full of kids who smoke pot. Most of the members of the football team and other "jock" sports are among them. But students from the skater or hippie cliques are also known to smoke weed a lot too, and often do it on campus. The teachers don't usually find them, but YOU can find them if you know where to look. :) Then, needless to you, we have some students who are on the football team too who are preppies rather than jocks. They hang around the other preppies, the ones who DON'T do drugs and actually make a point in people's face about staying away from the drug culture. They have the same values the jocks claim to have (including being on the anti-gay side, etc.) but live up to everything they say and don't get loaded.
